Neurodevelopmental & Behavioural Optometry

Kensington Eye Centre would like to introduce you to our new specialist service, targeted towards supporting children with visual and developmental learning difficulties.

Firstly, there are many reasons for children to be struggling at school, or not fully meeting their potential. Research shows that up to 20% of children have a vision related learning difficulty. This can cause children to be misdiagnosed with specific learning conditions, such as ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), Dyslexia and Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). Problems with vision and visual stress (Meares -Irlen Syndrome) can also cause a wide range of symptoms for children which impact on their learning but can be effectively treated and resolved.

Secondly, many children have retained primitive reflexes which can lead to developmental delays. The persistence of primitive reflexes contributes to issues such as learning difficulties (underage reading levels, difficulties copying from the board, losing their place whilst reading or misreading words, letter reversal, omitting words), poor coordination, balance, sensory perception, fine motor skills (poor pencil control and writing, using scissors for cutting tasks, colouring), concentration and all levels of social, emotional, and intellectual learning. This can be labelled as Neuro-Developmental Delay (NDD).

Our specialist Behavioural Optometrists at Kensington Eye Centre, have been studying ways to help these children who could not normally be identified in a routine eye examination and have recruited the help of Janet Glover, a consultant in all aspects of Neuro-Developmental Delay (INPP, RMT, MNRI, Johansen) and her husband John, who is a specialist Neuro-Developmental and Behavioural Optometrist who have been successfully treating patients in the NW of England for many years. They have kindly agreed to come and support our work and share their passion and enthusiasm for changing children’s lives.

If you feel that your child, whilst bright is under achieving at school and struggling, it may be that that they fall into the 20% category. We are now able to offer a full service in order to identify and remedy the cause of this difficulty. If you would like more information or access to these services, please consider completing the enclosed questionnaires or call the practice for more details.  We will evaluate the information you send to us and formulate the best individual assessment/treatment programme for your child.

We are very excited about our new venture and can’t wait to begin this important work. For any queries or questions please do not hesitate to contact us 020 7937 8282 or email kensingtoneyecentre@gmail.com.
